Denver Newborn Photography | Our Macy Rose!

Wow - I can't believe how lucky I am. I have an amazing husband and supportive family. I have a job that is also a passion. I have clients who are also friends. Now I get to be a mother to this beautiful baby girl. Macy Rose came into our lives three weeks early due to some complications but was born perfectly healthy on November 27, 2011.

Posting these first images has taken me a bit longer than I had planned. Photographing a new baby is something I have done many times - but photographing my own little one has been a different challenge. Sometimes I just stare - wondering how this little miracle made her way to me - then I take a picture. I am sure I will take thousands of photos of her throughout her life - but I am trying to remember to occasionally put the camera down and just sit and stare.

With this baby of mine fast approaching - this was my last official Fall session - and we were really lucky to have beautiful weather and really fun fallen leaves. This adorable family was a great way to wrap up the season - what with all the fall leaf throwing, cute wagon ride and lots of laughs. Oh and don't forget the upside down swinging and baby tossing - everything I like in a session!

Denver Maternity Photography | Megan + Mike with a Baby girl on the way!

I was really looking forward to Megan and Mike's session since we are both due with our first babies in December. I was excited to photograph someone going through a similar experience. I think until you have been on the other side of what you are shooting - it is hard to understand how your subjects feel. The same thing happened after I was married - it gave me a whole new perspective as a bride and as a photographer.

Well - let me say I have a new appreciation for my maternity sessions after shooting one at almost 9 months pregnant. Some of the first professional pictures I ever took were of a pregnant woman and I have loved doing it since. But now that I know what it feels like on the other side - I will enjoy these type of sessions that much more and really understand the experience and the joy.

Megan and Mike were great - so warm and fun with each other. Their little girl Reese is really lucky to be coming into this family. Here are a few faves from the session... can't wait to meet the new arrival!

Denver Pet Photography | Suzie, TJ & Bella!

I really like dogs. That being said - I am one of the 5 people in Colorado who doesn't own one. Of course I am exaggerating but they really are everywhere here. My husband is allergic and I prefer cats - but there is something about that loyal, undeniable look of love in a dogs' eyes - even for a person he just met. Not something you get with a cat :-)

Here are Suzie, TJ and their little sweetie - Bella. We took Bella for a walk around Wash Park on a beautiful fall morning. She loves squirrels and leaves and disliked being on a leash but we ended up with some really cute shots. We also were able to get a few good ones of the cooperative humans - but really - it's all about Bella!

I really enjoy when a client wants pictures of/with/about their dogs. They are not always easy subjects but they sure are cute and this session reminded me of what I love about dogs. Here is my list...

1. They know how to enjoy life

2. They generally put up with our human desire to dress them up (adorable)

3. They make family photos even cuter

4. They can't hide their emotions (Squirrel????)

5. They hold still for about 1/2 a second if you are lucky (good training for kids)

6. They are easily framed out of a head shot

7. Leashes (can't do that as well with a cat)

8. Cute tongues

9. Small ones are easy to hide

10. They like public displays of affection

11. They pop up right when you want them to

12. Did I mention cute tongues?

13. Dogs like walking - great exercise!

14. They are so photogenic

15. They don't mind if you ignore them for a while... as long as you come back with a treat :-)

16. They get tired and will eventually just lay there so you can get more cute pictures

17. But pretty soon they are back to their cute, playful selves

18. You get to come home to this

19. They have little best friends who come over for play dates (Bella is on the left)

Breast Cancer Awareness Month | Portraits Published in Urban Ink Magazine!

Meet Reda - a beautiful breast cancer survivor and tattooed diva! She asked me to take some portraits of her and her collection of tattoos - including the one she is currently having done across her mastectomy scars. She submitted these along with her survival story to the national tattoo magazine - Urban Ink. She was hoping to get into their October issue to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness month. I am excited to say that the magazine published her unique story titled "Marked-up Survivor" as well as a profile of her tattoo artist, Shane Adair, of 5280 Ink.

This was a personal project for me - getting to tell someone's story through my pictures is at the heart of why I love photography. Sharing a powerful story of survival like Reda's was truly special. She was so great to work with and so open about everything she went through. Many of us know someone affected by breast cancer and I admire that Reda has chosen to tell her story in this way.

Thank you to Urban Ink for publishing a story with such heart and relevance and thank you Reda for asking me to be a part of this. The issue is out this month - I scanned in the spreads to share with you as well as some of my fave images from the session.

Denver Newborn Photography | Brooks is here!

So if you saw my previous post - you were hopefully anticipating adorable, tiny baby pictures.

Well - here they are! Mr. Brooks arrived earlier than planned but as his parents say - he is "small but mighty". I love that.

He weighed in at 4 lbs 15 ounces but perfectly healthy and ready to take on the world. With big brother Hudson there to show him the ropes - this little guy is well on his way! Congratulations mom, dad and Hudson - he is amazing and I am so lucky to get to see what the future has for him.

Maternity sessions are truly one of my favorite things to photograph. I love the anticipation and beauty of a mom-to-be. I love an adorably decorated nursery. I love the big belly.

It is also really special for me when I am asked to do this for a friend - throw in an adorable 4 year old and cute-as-can-be dog and I am really in photo heaven. Next post will be the newborn photos - can't wait to share those!

This is Little Miss Brynn (seen here in her 6 month portraits) she is now such a big girl! She is fun and active so her mom and dad wanted to get pictures of her just being a little girl. What she loves best is riding her bike, playing with her dog and dancing in her school's ballet studio - so that's what we did. I love the un-posed, un-scheduled feel of this shoot. I think it really captures who she is right now - a small window into this time of her life that she will always have.

What a wedding this was! Suzy and Mike are two of the most outgoing, fun-loving people I have ever met. Their wedding was a mix of Colorado natural beauty and Downtown chic. The ceremony took place at the Rockland Community Church in Golden, CO and the reception was held downtown Denver at the Warwick Hotel. So here is part two of Jessi and Kyle's Colorado Springs wedding. The reception was held at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's - Lodge at Moose Lake. What a fun place for a reception! The carousel was open for guests and while the animals were all tucked in for the night - we did see a few colorful peacocks.

This was a beautiful evening full of emotional toasts, fun dancing and a sparkler exit fitting for the 4th of July weekend! I am so honored to have been a part of this magical evening!

This is the first part of Jessi and Kyle's beautiful wedding in Colorado Springs. This post has a few details from before the wedding, the ceremony at Broadmoor Community Church and the beautiful floral from Sunflower Creative.

The whole day was very personal and really reflected them as a couple. There was a special ring on Jessi's bouquet, small touches throughout used to honor those who could not be there and personal vows they wrote to each other. It was all from the heart and genuinely showed how much love and respect they have for each other.

Fine Art Friday | Spring has Sprung!

I am not sure if any of you here in Colorado have noticed that Spring is slowly trying to bring back colorful life to our beautiful state. As I drive around - I can't help but spot the whites, pinks and greens dotting the otherwise barren twigs we call trees. These blooms and blossoms do not last long so I thought that they would make a very pretty installment of Fine Art Friday.

You may notice that I got a shot of another harbinger of spring - a flighty little bee! He just happened land on the bloom I was photographing... a sign of great things to come?

Colorado Newborn Photography | Custom Designed Announcements!

I am not a graphic designer. That being said, I love color, fonts, graphics and layouts. I create my own albums for customers and my website has always been designed by me. I love the challenge of balancing great photographs, meaningful text and coordinating colors to make something meaningful.

This is a baby announcement I designed for Baby Evan. I used colors and texture that fit with the images from two sessions that we chose to be on the invitation. The parent's had the idea of saying that they "gained a few pounds over the holidays" so we were able to make the card even more personal. Having a design custom created to fit the mood and style of your images really gives a custom look that no one else will have. These are truly unique!

Fine Art Friday | Opening day!

In honor of Baseball's opening day I thought I would get down and dirty with some new spring grass and a couple of classics from our nation's pastime! If you are paying attention - this is actually a softball - but it is all I have. Plus it is well worn and full of texture - making for great close-ups. The glove is nice and worn too - thanks to my husband. Maybe I will use these in a little boy's room someday...

Fine Art Friday | Scary Smoke and Mountains

So I am calling this Fine Art Friday - because it's Friday and these are landscape photos - but there is nothing fine about this situation. If you live in Colorado you are probably familiar with the fire situation we have in our foothills this week- the earliest start to our fire season in many years. These particular pictures were from this Tuesday and the Indian Gulch fire.

High winds and a dry winter make for some really dangerous conditions around here, making for a scary summer ahead. As horrible as this fire danger is for the homeowners nearby - it made for some truly remarkable mountain views for those of us in suburbia. I drove all over Highlands Ranch trying to find the best vantage point of these billowing smoke clouds and ended up with these images.

These fires can be truly devastating for those who have land, homes and businesses in the area. At this point - this fire is 77% contained and we are all thankful for that.

I drove to a different spot to catch the sunset - it took a ton of playing around with my settings - but I finally got a star shape out of the sun. Hopefully - these fires are put out soon and people who have had to evacuate can return home.

They are also great for creating a collage of your fave wedding photos. These are 6x6" cuties that work great in a series of three - but would be amazing as an art piece in a set of 6 or 9. They can also be customized with a pattern on the edges or the photo can wrap around.

I love that these are ready to hang and would look amazing anywhere in your home!

Fine Art Friday | My Old Camera Collection

This Fine Art Friday - I thought I would do something that I have wanted to do for a while - take a few pictures of my growing camera collection! At some point - I want to enlarge these to hang in my office. For now- it was just fun pulling them all off a shelf and getting getting them into some great light where they belong.

I am hoping to keep adding to this collection. None of them are really worth anything - but I keep them because they all mean something to me or have a place in the history of photography.

I have included a bit of techy info along with my personal connection to each camera. Going through this reminds me of how far we have come in this amazing thing called Photography.

This beast is one beautiful piece of machinery! It was once the standard in press photography. Yep - this giant was used to cover fast paced events and breaking news. It creates 4x5" negatives - very large but could be used very quickly with practice. I used it for one project in art school. Now it looks cool on a shelf. (this model was manufactured sometime between 1928 and 1939)

Here are my Kodak brownies - still arguably the most popular camera of all time due to low cost and ease of use. This camera introduced millions to the magic of photography

I love the design on the front. They came in a huge variety of styles over the years.

I will always have a soft spot for Kodak

My first "real" manual camera. Made probably in the late 80's - my brother brought it back from Germany and I made it mine shortly thereafter. It was a great camera that taught me the fundamentals of photography. I carried it around in high school, spent a summer in France with it and learned to love all things film. It stopped working in 2005 - but I will always keep it.


This cutie is affectionately known as "the brick" for it's rectangular, non-ergonomic design. This was the best-selling 35mm camera for about 3 decades - wow. We found this particular gem after my grandma passed - with film left in it.

What a colorful little dial

This is the crown jewel in my collection - my Mamiya RB67. I love this camera - I only stopped using it because processing it's 2x3" film is ridiculously expensive and I have no darkroom to enlarge in. This is the camera that I used for the images in this post and for my thesis project that I will post on here sometime soon. I also hiked the Great Wall of China carrying this 7 pounder...

This last shot is of my old light meter - love all the numbers - but really glad to have my digital SLR.

Denver Baby Photography | Benjamin at 7 months!

These are some of my favorites from my latest mini-session with Benjamin or (baby G as he is affectionately known.) You can see some of his previous sessions here and here.

With the help of daylight savings time - Benjamin was not too excited for this session. However - with help from mom, dad, grandma and a couple of friends - we really brought out the smiles. Thanks everybody!

This little guy can not take a bad picture - even when he is upset - he is adorable!!! I just love that I get to see him so often - can't wait for 9 months :-)

I recently photographed the Turner's maternity session - about two days before baby Evan arrived- great timing huh? Well baby Evan is here and he is such a cutie and big brother Jordan is really adorable with him. Mom and Dad couldn't be happier and of course Zoe the dog fits right in with all the cuteness :-) Congratulations - he is amazing!

What a fun family! You may recognize a few of them from here...
We had a great morning - starting out with some inside pictures on this beautiful staircase. Then we headed outside to play with the dogs and enjoy some early Colorado spring weather! I think you can really see how close they are and how much they enjoy spending time together. The kids also got to ride around in some amazing vintage pedal cars. I did not realize that car makers used to give out these miniatures as an incentive when you bought the full size version. Nice marketing technique! They also make for really cute pictures... Here are some of my favorites!

Katie in the Kitchen | My First Homemade Pizza Crust*

Pizza - a passion to some, a favorite for many and a delicious vice to a lot of us. Who doesn't love pizza? My first job ever was at a small pizza joint. Our crusts and sauce were made by our managers so I only worked the register and sometimes handled the oven. (scary) It was not the best experience so I have pretty much stayed away from ever making my own. So - most of my experience with pizza has been eating it.

Perfect idea for my latest kitchen project.

Here is the link to the recipe I followed from Anna Maria Volpi. She included some great tips for working with the dough - something I am not very good at. I used whole wheat flower instead of regular - my attempt at a healthy pizza. For toppings I decided to go basic pepperoni (I knew that my husband would eat it :-) I used an Italian blend of cheeses (shredded by the good folks at Kroger) as well as Parmesan to top it off.

*For sauce - I chickened out and used a jar sauce (I only wanted to tackle the dough - next time I will make a sauce.)

I ended up with enough dough for two pizzas - the dough was challenging to get into any type of shape but I managed to get one squarish and one roundish. I used the pizza stones that my mom left in my care when they moved. The stones have been previously only used for baking frozen stuff. No more! The crust came out perfect - not too thick. I don't think this particular dough would be good for a thick crust- it is pretty doughy - if that's a word. On to the pictures. (turns out that pizza is pretty tough to photograph - but I made an attempt)

Fine Art Friday | Castle Rock

So this Friday I thought I would go old school - literally. These images were part of a Fine Art Black + White class that I took while in college. It's fun to go back and look at the work I was doing 7 years ago. I was starting to discover a passion for photographing people in their environment - something I still love to do today. These were all created using a monster film camera and were developed and printed by hand. (see the end of this post for more detailed information)

This project was created when I worked at a mom + pop photography lab in Castle Rock. I worked there for 7 years, learned a great deal about photography, made great friends and connections with many people and photographers in town. I decided to start taking environmental portraits of some interesting people I ran into on a daily basis at work. What I didn't know was that on the day I finished this project - I found out the owners of my store were closing the place and I was out of a job - a job that I loved and is still my favorite to date (besides what I do now :-)

So for me - these images are a snapshot of a place and time that no longer exists and a commemoration of that time in my life.

For those of you interested in the photography aspect of these images - here you go!

These were all taken in the age of film. Yep that's right. Film. Here is what the camera that made these images looks like (not my exact camera but close)

Super fun to use - but not easy. Especially when photographing people.

To compose an image - you use a focusing screen on top of the camera and the view is upside down. You need to manually set your exposure with the help of a light meter. (You know the thing that photographer's use in the movies to check the light and make them look really professional?) The negatives that this beast creates are 2x3 inches in size (35mm film is 16x24 mm) It makes for amazing shots - but quite a learning curve to use! The digital images above exist because before I graduated - I scanned all my negatives to get digital files. I am so glad I did.

Fine Art Friday | Landscape from One Spot

Ahhh- Landscapes. I have a love/hate relationship with you... There are so many people out there who are fantastic at photographing the natural world. They spend days stalking the perfect location, hours waiting for amazing light and then, they may be rewarded with that one magical shot.

I do not have the patience for all that.

I love people. Even when I was given a landscape project in school - I always found a way to get a human being in the shot. People are always changing and moving - that is why I usually find portraits much more rewarding.

So with that being said - I decided this Fine Art Friday- I would dedicate to the fine tradition of Landscape photography. Of course - I did not stalk this location for days- just pulled off the highway yesterday after a portrait shoot to find a great view of the mountains and fantastic clouds. I did have to take a little hike and deal with some squeaky prairie dogs - but this area had the best view. I wanted to see the sky and the ground- in all their glory - without moving from where I was standing. I also wanted to show that beauty can be found just about anywhere in this amazing state!

Fine Art Friday | Valentines Tulips!

Here is the first installment in my new blog series Fine Art Friday. As a photographer - I am always looking for ways to keep myself challenged and my work fresh. In art school - we were assigned projects by our professors. This was a way to challenge our creativity and skill. Especially since we all have a different opinion about what Art is. We would then share our work with each other in class and critique each others' work. This is one of the best ways to grow as an artist and I feel that I am missing that since I have left school.

With Fine Art Fridays I will be assigning myself mini-projectswhere I will strive to create something beautiful or something that will make you think. Imay also post other people's work that I consider amazing orbiographies of artists I admire.

I want to create work that is beautiful and timeless; abstract or truthful; conceptual or realistic. Many of these words are used to describe the idea behind an image. Art should make you think or at least be beautiful to look at. It may even be inspiring. It is the Idea behind the image that I want to focus on.

Valentine Tulips

I thought that my first post would be an homage to the ever enduring tradition in the art world of the Still Life. These are tulips that my husband gave me on Valentine's day. Aren't they beautiful? He did a great job and even though I love roses (of course!) I was really impressed with these violets. They make for a great still life with all of the texture and color. Red is a very difficult color to photograph in digital photography so it was a bit tricky - but I think they turned out really pretty.

Let's just say that I do not have a ton of cooking and / or baking experience. Sure - I baked sugar cookies to give away at my wedding (with lots of help) and my brownies from a box are Ah-mazing - but I am not a from scratch kind of girl. So I am starting a new project that I am o-so-creatively calling Katie in the Kitchen. I will be choosing recipes for baking or cooking that I think Dave and I would enjoy and documenting all the fun.

...and of course - there will be pictures. I will include some During shots - probably with my trusty point and shoot camera and then some well-lit, pretty pictures that I will call Finished culinary works of art or something like that :-)

First project - in honor of Valentine's Day - Mini Red Velvet Whoopie Pies.

These delicious little guys are part cake, part cookie and part sandwich. Also - they are adorable. Probably the cutest thing you will ever eat. I found the recipe at Better Homes and Gardens dot com. Here is the recipe if you would like to make them yourself.

Note: I highly recommend having a great friend to bake with. It is more fun than baking alone- plus she is the proud owner of a Kitchen Aid stand mixer. This device is truly magic.

Here is the dry portion of the process.

Here is the super sticky wet portion. I used a small ice cream/cookie scoop. It worked so much better and was more fun than a boring old spoon. The batter is really sticky - which makes for great cookie/ cake/ sandwiches but also created really sticky fingers.
Note: I doubled the recipe and when you do this it requires two whole bottles of red food coloring. I recommend hiding your white dish cloths.

I am so thrilled to have Jen + Sean's wedding featured today on Couture Colorado - Colorado's premiere wedding blog. This is such great exposure - not only for me - but also for the other vendors who made this wedding so fantastic! Submitting weddings and engagements for publication is an extremely important piece of marketing and I plan on doing it as often as I can. I am so happy that two online publications wanted to use this wedding. It is amazing to be featured on one blog - but two? Denver Family Photography | Tracee, Ken and family!

This is Ken + Tracee and their adorable dogs Jaegar and Tia! These dogs were really great at posing - this is not always the case - so I was able to get some really cute portraits of them! The humans were pretty cooperative too :-) I am a cat person but the more time I spend with dogs makes me a bit sad that my husband is allergic. At least I have great friends and clients with dogs so I can get my puppy fix!

I can't believe these little cuties are already one years old! I photographed these twins when they were really tiny (see the post here) and now they are walking around and so much fun. They had a great time playing with balloons, having a tea party and just being super cute. They are always on the move and so energetic - which makes for great candid shots - and a great workout for me!

This was their response when we started singing Happy Birthday to them - adorable!
